Can anyone tell me what the format is for Margaret's famous tour of Callanish? We're planning a trip to Lewis in August, and I'm trying to figure out whether we should try and take the tour.

If anyone has been on it, can you tell me whether it focuses on the main Callanish site? Is it £30 per hour, or per person? Is an hour enough?

I've found the web page...

http://www.nccn.net/~wwithin/curtis.htm

...but it doesn't provide much detail on the tour itself. I guess I could ring Margaret and ask her in person, but I thought I'd try you lot first.

I'd like to know too!

Didn't do it when we went. It was bank hol weekend & there was no sign of her at her house, though we didn't try ringing her.

Got the impression the content could be adapted to what you wanna see/know about most. Her ad in the visitors centre clearly sez per hour, but whether that's per person or per group isn't absolutely clear on that either. It would seem a bit expensive if it was per person? Or would it?

There are folk around who have done it - hopefully they'll respond too.

I've taken the tour through the tour group with"Well Within" the sponsor of the relevant web page. I do not know what Ms. Curtis does for her regular tour, but she seems to be very accommodating as well as knowledgeable. She has also taken people to Callanish II and III in the past, but I do not know whether she will still do this, due to advancing age.

Mark

From what I've heard it's worth every penny. Surely just to say you had the Margaret Curtis Tour is worth sploshing out £30! The more time goes by the more I reckon I'll never have the chance.

One thing I do know, even if it's only Callanish I then you'll learn things that you won't find out if you're on your own. I mean you could get a good book and stand there with a diagram going "is it that one or that one?" whilst pointing aimlessly etc ... but it ain't the same is it!?

One hour was not enough for me, I spent three hours with Margaret and that was not enough time - I needed an entire weekend, her knowledge is vast. Tours can be whatever you want them to be, she's in your hands, so you do what you like in terms of info, timing and touring. Callanish should not be seen without a tour. I will be heading back to Lewis in May 2011 and will deffo be arrnaging to see margaret again. You will not be disappointed.

Does anyone know if Margaret is still offering tours? Just stumbled on this thread when googling for info but all references seem old and the link Kammer posted up in his OP doesn't seem to work any more?

I was hoping to go over to do some work and remembered Jane mentioning in her blog that time with Margaret really helped her artisitic recording of the site and thought I should find out what her prices were, etc... (it's something I've wanted to do anyway, good excuse!!)

Perhaps she's retired, so to speak? Although the ways others speak of her I find it hard to believe! :-D
