Not sure about your cross but on Bodmin Moor they carved these into rocks to denote areas that could not be quarried, circa 1845.

Just added a comment along these lines....I thought it could be a quarrymans boundary marker. Similar carvings can be found at Gardoms Edge and other mill stone quarries along the gritstone edges.
