It’s that time of the year again when we look forward to sun and summer, and our annual (this year being our fifth) picnic at Avebury. As the weather has not been too good for the last two years the picnic on the grass has normally ended up in the Red Lion, with people scattered amongst its many rooms. Fingers crossed for fine weather this year but, if not, the Red Lion in Avebury will again be our venue. Otherwise, the picnic will take place by the recumbent stone in the south-east quadrant of the Avebury Henge from noon onwards on Saturday, 21 August 2010. All are welcome. Bring your own food and drink, or eat at one of several pubs around Avebury.

Watch this space for further updates.

Update 1. If the weather’s poor, head for the large front room at the Red Lion (on the left as you enter from the front) and look out for people wearing a Megameet T-shirt. The sign** below will also be on one of the tables (or by the recumbent stone above if we meet outside). People will start meeting from noon onwards so just come over and introduce yourself.

** Heritage Action logo to be precise....

I'll be there! As will Mrs G, Mini-Goff and the shiny new Baby-Gofflet! Looking forward to seeing you all, and letting you have a coo over the wee one. ;)

For anyone who's not been before, the Megameet's always a blast. Come along and meet a bunch of thoroughly nice people! Talk is not always megalithic, but there's a fabulous collective knowledge of the area and of many other sites worldwide!

Looking forward to it very much indeed. :)

Not to worry. I will also be there and sunshine follows me as surely as thunder follows lightning.

*licks pencil,writes "Megameet" in diary*

:o)

*BUMP!*

I just thought I'd get this bumped up again, cos I keep forgetting the date of it this year!

So. 21st August it is then. See you there! :)

So quite a lot of you guys do ACTUALLY go to this then? Its not just one of those things that sounds like it should have lots of people who "know their stuff" but it actually full of blank faces and drunken idiots leaving a bloody mess? Not that I'm suggesting you wont all be drunk...

To quote from the Heritage Journal, but as the Easter holiday approaches it seemed appropiate to draw attention to the annual summer get-together.... Hopefully the sun will shine.

I'll be in Avebury at the time, might pop in to say hi.

Just to clarify, the main plan is a picnic in the henge. If there's a brief shower and you can't find anyone try the Lion first. We'll be at the Waggon only if it's hopelessly wet from the start.

*BUMP*

(Or should that be *TUMULUS*)

*TWANG*

I've had some wild and vindictive accusations thrown at me in recent months by a couple of individuals on this forum. For the record this is the ONLY comment I have made on this thread so the accusation that I am disrupting the forum is totally a false one. I imagine the latest onslaught is because I spoke with some appreciation about time and input Pete Glastonbury gave me a couple of years back with regards to the archaeology at Avebury.

There is absolutely no point in me trying any longer to contribute to this forum or to TMA in general when Nigel Swift/Resonox lie in wait to sabotage anything I say. On reflection perhaps my comment about drink/driving was ill judged but then perhaps so is encouraging people to drive to a beer festival.

On that note I'm bowing out. Congratulations Nigel/Resonox on your clever words but it should be clear to anyone who is not 'in your gang' that you are just another bully.

(Edit: This post appears on this thread because the thread that prompted it had been locked).

I see I'll have to close the thread for the moment due to a 'predicted' outcome. It happened last year, and it has happened again! Make what you will of that........

Ha! Unlocked - beat that VJ : -)

And finally (for now!)...

[EDIT: Oops! Mucked the quote up a bit first time. You get the general idea though... ;) ]

*BOING*

Boing, Ping, Bump, etc. Sorry to be so late in posting this. Last minute plans are coming to fruition.

Loie and I will attend. We will arrive on Thursday the 19th and stay at the New Inn, Winterbourne Monkton. We'll leave on Tuesday, the 24th. Not sure at the moment of exact times. But, if anyone has any suggestions of things to do, or would be willing to squire us around, help us find the perfect Good Pub Food places to have dinner, etc,. we'd appreciate the help!

In the meantime, we're assuming it's still picnicing "in either the north-east or south-east quadrant of the Avebury Henge" unless raining. Which, considering we plan to attend, is pretty much a given. In which case, we are to gather at "Waggon and Horses pub at Beckhampton" Not sure we know that one. Is that where Jimit took us for a birthday party? Kind of next to the Sheila-na-gig church? I'll google the pub.

See you all soon!

Looking forward to seeing you both again. BTW it is the National Trust which give out crappy "prizes" to the winners of their photo competition "Circles in Time" :(

Jim.

The 20 prize winning photos are displayed in the cafe in Avebury and the NT have told me that these, of much better quality, will be sent to the winners when the exhibition finishes in Sept.
Jim.

Just a reminder as the 21st approaches, hope that those who are not too sure manage to turn up - Juamei and Goff ;)....

If the weather is fine, noon onward at this particular stone, in the south-east quadrant,

Otherwise, the dear old Red Lion if its raining!

*SCRUNGE*

It's tomorrow!!

Possibly pub then

So! How was it for everybody? :)

Wonderful time. So good to see friends and meet new ones.

The highlight, of course, being Jimit's lovely prize. We hope he's getting over it.

Jamie took us 'round their area Sunday to see Stoney Littleton and Stanton Drew complex. Fascinating, although we didn't notice anything like baking heat. The bright sun did a good job of illuminating the barrow interior. Jamie got to say hello to some lambs. Amy was the perfect hostess after our expedition. Loie enjoyed meeting cats.

Monday our very long time friend Craig came out from London and we toured around. On the way to pick him up in Swindon, we attempted to see the ring at Winterbourne Basset, but wet weeds and grass too high to muck about in. The churchyard at Biddeston was the most picturesque we've yet seen. Excellent lunch at the King's Arms in Monkton Farleigh, a Beautiful Village and home of quite an impressive manor house. Saxon church well worth a visit to Bradford on Avon. Several things there closed too early for us to see the interiors, but a lovely town. We watched a cricket match for a few minutes without being able to appreciate the finer points of the game. Craig was no help on that. Home made pies made for quite a good supper during the Pub Quiz in the Bunch of Grapes. Was that place hopping!

Altogether, one of the best visits ever. Thank you to everyone, one and all. We promise to get to Winchester cathedral next time!
