Silbury Hill trespassers causing 'spectacular' damage

Time somebody was prosecuted for causing damage.

Under these conditions, you would think it provable.

Hmmm. An unfailingly intense and contentious topic on TMA. Whilst I don't doubt it's worthwhile posting a link to the story, I think we all know only too well how threads about climbing Silbury tend to go here.
'Famous', in fact, for it's ability to bring mayhem to this community, i'd say.

The forum has been good lately, it would be a shame for this to turn into one of 'those' threads.

Some of us think climbing Silbury is ok and will continue to do it, others don't. We never seem to get any further than that, whether Jim Leary says its causing damage or not!

I'm no different to most people I wouldn't have thought, but it amazes me how many people I meet who have never heard of Avebury let alone Silbury Hill. I wonder why that is?

I give my full support to Jim Leary's polite request to people not to climb up Silbury, at any time, least of all while the ground is so sodden. The flooding around Avebury is really quite scary, I have never seen anything like it - even 2007 wasn't anything like this year. Why anyone would want to wade through quite deep water to climb up Silbury is beyond me.

This makes for a good read…

And this is interesting considering our discussion on the original path…a flight of stairs??!!

‘The present pathway up the mound is a useful archaeological indicator, for its position has not changed at all since John Aubrey - often regarded as the founding father of analytical field survey - illustrated it during the 1660s. All features that the path overlies or cuts through must therefore be earlier. One earthwork that the path post-dates is a broad but low bank that rises from the terminal of the western causeway almost to the summit. It is conceivable that this marks the line of a hedge that once subdivided the mound, but it could represent an ancient route to the summit - perhaps even the remains of a flight of stairs’.

Is this the longest Silbury thread on tma without war breaking out and the topic getting locked?

Has the evident damage got tma-ers to pick up the same hymn sheet and discuss rationally?

I need a lie down, I feel dizzy!

Serious question (yes I know it is rare): with EH putting a hold on blue plaques (sort of) because they are skint, they could potentially claim they can't afford new/more signs. My reaction is Silbury can't afford not to have improved signage (and they should have taken note all along). Whilst I loathe the idea, and feel something of the spirit of place would be eclipsed, and it might even be counterproductive, what do people here think about signage potentially being sponsored?

Before anyone says that won't happen, the WHS road signs were always an embarrassment, have needed replacing for 5 years, and it looks like sponsorship might be the only way of achieving that. Yuk!
