The Hoar Stone

close

Hiya

Took a trip to see the Hoar Stone and Lyneham Longbarrow yesterday. The Hoar Stone is an excellent place so tranquil despite the presence of a road only a few yards away. I have a question does anybody know what the mound immediately behind the Hoar Stone is. A first glance it appears that the longbarrow has been disembodied but close up the two are clearly nothing to do with each other and the mound is clearly a 20th century construction. What is it? It has 3 sets of curved black pipes sticking out if it my guess an air raid shelter?Any clues?
Over too you.

Hi Joolio
Yes it is 20th century, though I don't believe it's an airraid shelter. I think it's a local irrigation/water thingy.*
* Thingy= maybe a basin/cistern/pumping thang that serves Enstone village,

Did you find the Hawk Stone, in a field about 3 miles west of the Hoar Stone? It's an unsung treasure.

The Hoar Stone is one of my favourite places, the stones just seem to lurk under the trees waiting to be found. The 'wotsit' behind it does look like an air raid shelter, but I remember reading somewhere that it is indeed some kind of water reservior/pumping facility. There used to be some iron steps leading into it - if you are feeling brave enough ;)
