Hi Eveyone

I'm planning a trip to Cornwall in August all being well. We'll be camping and I'm obviously planning to go to as many sites in West Penwith as possible but wondered if anyone had any advice on the best areas to stay.

I'll be with my other half who hates anything stone related and if I locate us in stone rich areas which may not have any other attractions such as beaches, coves, picturesque villages, secenery etc nearby then I'll be castrated!

Does anyone know of an area to stay that encapsulates all the traditional attractions that is not too far from the lands end sites? I've seen Boleigh Farm campsite from some posts here but didn't know what the area itself was like apart from the stones? I'd want to stay in the nicest area regardless of stone stuff but maybe do a day trip to lands end, so more a general tourist request than stone centric one.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Gwass

Forgot to mention.

Thanks to thesweetcheat who's recent Cornish pics inspired the trip!

Hi Gwass.

I stayed in Levant House campsite a few years back with the lady I went on to marry. Best holiday of my life.

http://www.thecaravancommunity.com/caravan_campsites/south-west-1649/cornwall-26/levant-house-caravan-and-camping-site-2712.html?action=site_location

i always stay in Perranporth, as it has a massive nice beach, is kind of central, has a bar on the beach that serves excellent food, has all the shops and ice cream shops you need, and its easy to get anywhere from there.
it also is surrounded by holiday sites and is just down the road from Newquay (if you want to go where all the crowds are)

cant add much to the lists above really, but can say that its really nice down there. and i need to go back soon.

Lanyon Quoit is a must.

oh and there are so many sites to visit that i still havent been to them all and i have been going down to Cornwall for the past 8 years, sometimes twice a year. i normally fit in 2 days of stones in the week we are down. we do tend to visit some everytime though as they are brilliant. like Men-an-tol.... sorry im rambling now. i love cornwall.

Hi Gwass,
As no doubt you'll be pass through Cornywall from east to west, why not stop off for a couple of days and take in what Bodmin Moor and the area has to offer (shame Mr Hamhead is not tuned in as he's your man). Your other half, and yourself would like the Looe/Polperro area possibly as a base and from there you could take in Duloe the quartz stone circle (near Looe), the Hurlers stone circle, Rillaton Barrow and the Cheesewring at Minions and the outstanding Trethevy Quoit nearby. If I'm around then I would be delighted to meet up with you at Minions and show you around there and at the Quoit.

Cheers

Roy

......OK..I heard my name mentioned..

West Penwith can easily fill your six days so don't bust a gut trying to do Bodmin Moor as well...come back another time and do it.

Camp sites down west that I would recommend are Trevedra near Sennen. It's a large site but very nice and you can walk to the beach. Does get very busy in August though. There is a campsite at Treen near Porthcurno, very handy for the Minack, several stone circles and you can walk out to the cliff path in the evening to watch the sun go down...and the pub down the road is good (Logan Rock Inn). Boleigh Camp site was pretty basic when we last stayed there (several years ago now) it is also a bit out of the way. We use Bone Valley just outside Penzance every year. It is small, clean and tidy and handy for walking into Penzance. Easy to access the moors and all the stones as well as St Ives etc.

Beaches.....St Ives will be heaving in August...if you like noisy children, fake surfers and bad art then go there....Sennen is great, there is always somehwere to relax even on a busy day...head for the northern end to avoid the familys. Porthcurno and Porthgwara are well worth checking out, Porthcurno as well as the Minack also has the Telegraph Station museum which is worth checking out. Porthgwara has man made caves cut through the cliffs and a little tea shop but not much else. From there you can walk along the the coast path to Nanjizel...don't tell everyone but this has to be the best beach down that way. Seals swim off shore, there is golden sand, sea caves and because you have to walk it never gets crowded...but you won't have it to yourself.

What else would I reccomend?

Pubs....Old Success at Sennen Cove, Gurnards Head at Treen (on the north coast) is great for food..but pricey. The Dock Inn, Penzance is a great locals pub. The Star Inn in St Just is another true Cornish pub.

Buy fish and chips in St Just and drive out to Cape Cornwal or Botallack and eat them whilst sitting watching the sun go down over the sea.

The road from St Ives to St Just is a must. spend a day travelling along it, stopping off to look at things. Zennor, Carn Galva and Bosigran cliff, Levant and Botallack mines, Cape Cornwall....

DON'T go to Land's End! unless you walk through it on the coast path...commercialised tat and so much health and safety notices that you dont get to see the cliffs...

and then there are the sites....far too many to choose from...and did some bald bloke mention wells?

Enjoy your holiday...happy to answer any questions

Mr H

Hi there,

If you visit Men-an-Tol, the Nine Maidens, or the Lanyon quoit I can thoroughly recommend the 'Lanyon Tea Room' on Morvah Road. They don't offer accommodation, but it's a fine place to have a cream tea and a bun. They also sell books about the local area. Look for a grey stone farmhouse on a hill.

There's also a nice cafe in the old school house in Morvah, which sells great homemade cakes and local crafts. Both of these are in areas full of monuments, so they're good rest points as you tramp along.

I usually stay in St. Ives to be close to bus links, but yes, it'll be packed in August and parking is a nightmare. There's an open-top bus which makes a circle around the Penwith coast, and it's a fun way to see the peninsula. It costs about £7 for a day ticket, and you can hop on and off.

Finally, look out for choughs and basking sharks near Cape Cornwall! I'll be there in August too, and can't wait.

Enjoy!

all this talk of Cornwall is getting me to want to go down again.

There seems to be a bit of a gap around the Falmouth area (where the Calamity Clan will encamped) when I look over several maps of Cornish megalithia. Were a lot of sites cleared - or were there just not many stone circles and things created there, for some reason?

ive just booked a week in Marizion in October, so ill be visiting all the stones again. not much help to this thread, im just pleased to be going again
