I'm staying on Dartmoor for the week and me and the good lady have got our first car so keen to explore the area.
Has anyone got any recomendations for circle sites we must visit ???
We're off to Scorhill this afternoon and have done the obvious Hound Tor and Bowermans Nose a few times but wondered if anyone had any suggestions.
Thanks in advance.

holy moly pal. how much time do you have?

dartmoor is a treasure trove of neolithic sites, and i spent a week there.

my best recommendation would be the grey weathers. in my opinion, these two "side by side" circles are some of the most stunning i've ever seen.

you can find them easily enough as well, but they do require you to trek out to them. check them out either in the printed TMA or online here.

enjoy!

I liked my trip to the Plague Market (written up on TMA here) with its little stone circle, menhir, hut circles, cist and two stone rows! also v accessible but quite quiet nonetheless.

If you want to see some absolutely mad trees dripping with long lichens you should go to Wistman's Wood - a walk north from Two Bridges. It's the only bit of ancient woodland remaining on Dartmoor (mostly because it's growing on mad mossy boulders and so couldn't be grazed) - but look out because it's where the devil kennels his red-eyed hounds.

have fun - hope it's sunny for you

if you don't mind a bit of walking, you can park your car an do Brisworthy (circle) and Ringmoor (cairn circle and row), and then walk onto Drizzleocmbe (3 big rows with cairn circles and very large carin - highly recommended). Plus other bits and bobs in the area. Would take either a good half day, or slightly longer if you like exploring.

11,000 monuments to choose from!
I lived there for 10 years and only scratched the surface.
Ferworthy is a nice circle and row in the woods.
Butterdon stone row on the south of the moor is a cracking walk.
Yarner woods should be covered in Fly agaric and is like walking thorugh a fairy story at this time of year.

If you plan well you can see a lot in a week on Dartmoor. It's a fabulous place and some of the best have already been mentioned here.

TMA is a good guide to the area. Of course, don't forget your OS maps and a good compass. It's been years since I was on Dartmoor and it is one of the (many) places on my 'must return to one day' list.

Surely someone must know of a local book for local people!?
