Avebury & the Marlborough Downs

2009 Avebury Megameet lock

close

If this is WAY too "far in advance," I apologize and it can be taken down. But you can see from this how far in advance Loie and I need to plan! (Her work schedule and our budget necessitate.)

We are, as mentioned in the 2008 Megameet post, in the throes of planning Driving the Stone Age VIII: Turkey. If all goes well, sometime in the summer of 2009 we will visit The Standing Stones of Kalecik and Nemrut Dagi (not prehistoric but what the heck), Cayonu, Gobekli Tepe and Karahan Tepe, Catal Huyuck; and the Turkish museums containing artifacts from these (and of course other Meso- and Neolithic) sites. Note I say "summer," that is, June, July or August.

Considerations of weather and the dates when the archaeological sites will be open dictate the summer. What we'd like to ask, or propose, is that the 2009 Megameet be held in the summer, so that we could attend on the way BACK from DtSA VIII, and give the Meet a report, or at least have some way to show photos, etc. on DtSA VIII. Perhaps that's too much to hope for? The sites we plan to visit are not "megalithic," so might be beyond the purview of this site and the interests of this group.

If there's any interest in such a schedule, or if it's an imposition, please let us know. If there IS any interest, we'll do our best to coordinate with y'all.

If there IS any interest, we'll do our best to coordinate with y'all.
Excellent! Sounds like a great idea :-)

Woooooo, Catal Huyuck! Can I come?

Hi Bucky,
Just to assure you we haven't forgotten your request and of course the Megameet can be fitted in to a date that ensures you can get there. Judging by the postcards you and Loie have so kindly sent me you're currently gawd knows where but if we can liaise by email towards Christmas we can announce a suitable date at that time.

Brilliant idea! And I'll especially want to hear everything about Gobekli Tepe and Catal Huyuck. Let us know your dates when you have them.

Thanks from me too for the postcard Mr & Mrs B.

Guess you're back home now sorting out photos and stuff. Don't forget though that we hope to see you both in Avebury for next year's Megameet - as well as hearing all about your forthcoming visit to Turkey :-)

We may have been misinformed. The travel agent we asked about DtSA VIII told us Gobekli Tepe was most accessible for visits during the summer months. But the official word from DAI Orientabteilung is that September and October are the working months, hence the best for visits. ("Unfortunately we can not tell at this moment, when a team will be at Göbekli in 2009. That decision will be made only in November/December this year, the usual months for excavation being september/october.")

I have requested a confirmation of that, and am waiting for a reply. At the moment we're assuming we'll be trying to go to Turkey in the fall of 2009. September and October being perhaps not the most congenial time to visit beautiful and mythic Wiltshire, weatherwise, perhaps it is best that we not try to coordinate the Megameet with DtSA VIII. Sorry for all the confusion! This darned trip planning is a bit rough over the Internet.

We would still like to invite any interested parties to join us for Turkey. (Assuming we ever can figure it out!) The price quoted by the agent we contacted seemed very reasonable, and might even be slightly less per person for a larger group.

OK, so shall we say Saturday 1st August, South East quadrant, 12.00 onwards.... ?

Please bring megalith related foodstuffs (puns allowed) or not, as desired....

It is worth mentioning that there will be several of events happening at Avebury on 1st August 2009

Terry the Druid will be carrying out the annual Lammas ceremony in the morning.

This will involve a gathering in the sun circle followed by the procession to Silbury Hill. He will then climb the hill and give blessings for a successful harvest with the Lammas cakes. After the descent there will be another ceremony and the processional walk back to Avebury for the distribution of the Lammas cakes.

There will be a free and open Gorsedd of Caer Abiri in the sun circle at 14:00 followed by the Lammas games in the Moon circle at approx 14:30.

As these events are part of the annual pagan calendar, the NT will allow camping in the car park on Friday July 30th and Saturday the 1st of August. ALL tents must be removed and the area returned to normal by 16:00 hours on Sunday 2nd August.

TMA members are welcome to join the temporary camp on condition that they participate in at least one of the pagan ceremonies and/or the Lammas games. This is a stipulation made by the NT for allowing the pagan community to use the car park. Please respect this.

Aaaaaaanyway...

For those of us who merely enjoy being in the company of like-minded people with an interest in ancient sites, whatever your angle...

*BUMP!*

See you there on 1st August!

I look forward to seeing old friends, meeting new ones, chatting about stones and god knows what else(!), drinking, eating, walking, exploring, and just generally enjoying...

Now that the hysteria surrounding the mention of Terry has died down and any implied delusions made by others have been officially dismissed, I shall add to my previous post.

The NT flyer, Avebury Events - 2009, under the Summer talks, walks and workshops says.....

Festival of British Archaeology - July 18th - August 2nd

Meet the experts Sundays with our curator and our archaeologist. Taster tours around the Stone Circle Afternoon Rambles through the Avebury landscape with our Archaeologists or our Museum Curator.
Let the children discover their inner archaeologist with our mini-digs and other family activities.
Please telephone 01672 539 250 for more details.

For those who would like to read the official NT response to the campsite/tented accommodation during Periodic Observances at Avebury, a downloadable pdf is available here

http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/main/w-avebury_camp_consult.pdf

A few of us are meeting up at the The Who'd a Thought It pub http://www.pubinnguide.com/pubdetailsidx39.asp in the evening of Friday, 31 July for a pre-Megameet dinner and drink. If you're in the area for the Megameet the following day, and feel like joining us, you'd be very welcome. The Who'd a Thought It has a nice beer garden (not to mention probably the best egg, ham and chips in the county!) and is not too far a walk from Piggledean if you fancy taking that in as well.

Those who wish to wear costumes and play games should do so in the appropriate areas.

I have read all this from my first post - Posted by Chance 3rd July 2009ce 00:12

The line that PeteG claims is mis-information reads........

"TMA members are welcome to join the temporary camp on condition that they participate in at least one of the pagan ceremonies and/or the Lammas games. This is a stipulation made by the NT for allowing the pagan community to use the car park. Please respect this."

From this and this alone, PeteG and his cronies have tried to destroy the Sacred Sites Forum and the harmony of Avebury.

For those whom choose to search, Thelma (tjj), the offending post is clearly this one
http://www.themodernantiquarian.com/forum/?thread=46043&message=668657

this has been sent to various Avebury websites after solstice

" Tilia:
Was at Avebury yesterday for solstice celebration - would like to ask who the objectionable (and rather grubby) Druid was who swore and carried on at the wiccans who had just had a circle. I asked the NT woman, and she said he was the self appointed keeper of the stones....self appointed? That means without any authority but his own? Right. He was rude and not a good advertisment for Druidry or Avebury. The NT should be aware."

Are you saying that the NT will only allow people to camp as long as they listen to terrys rantings?
There are other pagans groups who want nothing to do with this bloke but who come to Avebury for their own spiritual purposes.
Having to attend a compulsory ceremony is outrageous!

Posted by Pete G 3rd July 2009ce 00:44

For the record let me state the following

Terry is not self appointed.
The time for approval of his office, for the proceeding twelve months, takes place at Samhain and yes, Terry is a 60 old that rides a few grubby old motorbikes

Any comments made by me concerning the Lammas games where in reference to being last year’s organiser.
I and I alone should be held accountable for the events of that took place that day.
Nothing that is posted here, on this topic, is a publicity stunt for the run up to this years' Lammas Games.
I was not self appointed but chosen by Gordon Reams, the Wiccan element of the pagan community.
Although this event is organised by the pagan community and is part of the Lammas festival, it does so by kind permission of the NT. Anybody and Everyone is allowed to join. Teams are always made up at the event.

Anyone wishing to attend any pagan events can find times and dates, along with other information concerning
the pagan community through the Avebury Circular or online at http://www.aveburycircular.co.uk .
Another, totally independent site worth visiting and downloading pdf is http://pagancalendar.co.uk .

Members of the Sacred Sites Forum Committee
I and most of the TMA forum would like and value your input.
Any "in-fighting" between any members should be noted but not accentuated on this or any other forum.
Sue has spoken of self appointed people and has clearly and persistently set herself up for such a role, Let it be so.
Please create a new topic under Avebury Sue, where such matters can be posted and meaningful dialogue established

As to any remarks about me being a self satisfied and self promoting ego driven character...
Me and my cycloptic friend will be around at Lammas and I shall continue to capture the pagan community
I cannot be everywhere at once, so if I don't record your activities, tough.
Video of previous Lammas events can be seen on my UTube channel - http://www.youtube.com/chippychance

With regard to the TMA Megameet itself
Hello everyone,
I know that none of this has put anyone off attending and you have more reason than ever to repeat last years comments.
If you do get any T shirts printed, Don't let the Louse steal Lammas would make an apt slogan for 2009…..

I would like to finish by saying a few words on this....

Posted by PeteG 12th July 2009ce 16:58 for and on behalf of, Mikki

"If I want to go to the Avebury event.

I want to keep my family and myself safe when attending organised events.... I was nearly sexually assaulted ( I had to fight to bastards of me and thank goodness a car pulled over and they fled) just a couple of months go and it has left me quite badly shaken. I do not want to be forced to stand in the presence of somebody that makes me feel uncomfortable."

Hi Mikki

Your concerns are justly stated, although your association with PeteG is not

If I were in your shoes, it would feel the same.
If you think anyone might try it on with you or your family, well just come.
Don't let anyone make you come and don't let anyone stop you from coming

Be strong child, don't let anyone take the Mikki.
