Marlborough

Just a quick tip for if you ever pop into Marlborough when out and about near avebury.

If you follow the signs to the car park behind all the shops, rather than parking along the main street - you'll find the River Kennet flowing along peacefully next to the car park, lined with trees.
I took my shoes and socks off and stuck my feet in the water. And then I fed some ducks with my sandwich. And then I watched the ripples. It was very soothing. and the perfect antidote to all those ludicrous clothes shops and £50 cushions in Laura Ashley. Marlborough's a bit weird isn't it.

Hi Rhiannon
Yes, I know what you mean about Marly, but all the same I quite like it. Architecturally it's quite interesting, but it has that strange upper/middle class poshness rubbing cheek to cheek with appalling rural/small-town poverty and deprivation. My home town (Stratford-on-Avon) was the same.

Once, as I was walking from the car park at the back of the shops to the main street, a freshly killed and partly-eaten pigeon dropped out of the sky directly in front of me! It whizzed past my face millimetres away and landed with a real thump at my feet. I guessed a hawk dropped it. It felt quite freaky at the time.

I'm going fishing for barbel in the Kennet on Friday :-) Not in Marly though.

That's a good tip Rhiannon - the carpark you mention is the one behind Waitrose isn't it.

Parking in the High Street is not easy, but another little known place to park is at the church end of the High Street. Opposite the church there's a pub called (I think) The Sun. If you go up the side road from the pub there's a carpark on the right and you can cut through that into the High Street.

Great tip. I usually drive straight through. Calne is another place I never consider stopping at.

A great little town if you want to buy a saddle, Barbour jacket, or a shot gun!
Both Nick Drake and Chris DeBurgh went to school at Marlborough - a real case of "sublime to ridiculous".

Nice mound - got stuck there hitching back from Stonehenge once. Have a speaker cabinet from Calne Cabinet Limited. Tony Blackburn went to that school too, perhaps. Fishing with hooks, net or trap? (Anthropomorphosise).

I like Marlborough and go ther quite alot, seeing as its not very far from here. It's the only place i can buy stylus' for my record player !
Its very much like the town i grew up in being a Georgian Market town with a river running through it.
Did you stand on the bridge to the car park (next to the Jesus book shop) and see the fish ? Don't know what fish they are but they're huge buggers !

There's a good kebab shop there too !!

:o)
