I looking to get up to Cumbria for the first time pretty soon to take one of my lads on his first camping trip, i'm being drawn towards Sunkenkirk for some reason though i can't explain why.
Any reccomendations from those that have been regular visitors to the sites there.
I don't necessarily need a campsite though we would be camping for at least one night.
I'm unsure about Castlerigg as it seems a bit too busy up there and i could always go there for a day trip.
Anyone. ?

Hi MD

I was up there last month at the Nothern Megameet and had a great time.

Sunkenkirk was my personal favourite as it seemed so remote and wild. I also got to Castlerigg at 6:30 in the morning to witness the sun rising over the moutains and the valley below filled with mist - a photgraphic dream.
Of course you should visit Long Meg and also Little Meg just for the rock art (my first RA experience). The same goes for Copt Howe but the rock art needs to be seen with the sun edge on to bring it out best. I think that was about mid dayish when we went there and the views were fantastic.
Moor Divock was a great little walk with plenty too see including The Cockpit Stone Circle and various ring cairns and standing stones. Mayburgh (think that is how you spell it) Henge was striking with it huge banks and solitary standing stonein the centre.
Other great sites I enjoyed were Gamelands and Druids Stone Circle as well as the one by Sellerfield which name escapes me. Plus countless other circles, standing stones and rows that I have forgotten but I am sure others will remind me of.

The weather can change from warm and sunny to driving rain at the drop of a hat but only adds to the atmosphere of this part of the world.

Hopefully I will finish my blog (on page 5 now) which will tell of my adventures there!!

Go forth and enjoy.

Is that like a sober Glaswegian?

I think virgins are welcomed at all megalithic sites.

Probably because you've seen photos of it - yes it really is that marvellous - and heard us all RAVE about it. Go there, megadread! Like Sunkenkirk, Castlerigg is, of course, a MUST SEE. And you CAN be alone there. You may just have to wait a while. You're going to LOVE it.

I'd troll up the M6 come off at Penrith and drop in on Mayburgh and King Arthurs Round Table, 2 minutes from the junction. You'll not see anything like Mayburgh this side of the Irish sea. This will also put you within striking distance of an easy dozen or so readily accessible sites.
I'd avoid Keswick and the Windemere area because it will be chokka-block with trippers.
Have a good 'un and learn the route cos you'll definitely want to return.

It's a fantastic place to visit without seeing any Monoliths..

I loved the lakes and the mountains. Some of the roads through the passes are unreal; and if you fancy a little walk/climb there is always Scafell Pike and Helvellyn with the Razorback Ridge..

Steam Boats and Steam Trains, there is a whole lot to see and do...

PS.. Don't forget, there will be low flying Fighter Jets occasionally streaking overhead..

It can be bit of a shock if your not expecting it..
