I'm planning on going to Aberdeenshire this Sept for my 40th birthday...I want to base myself near Dunnieer etc and explore the stones. Im going with my girlfriend, who is not as much as a stonehead as me, she is worried that there will be nothing to do at night - restaurants, pubs etc...anyone know what its like up there, all im bothered about is seeing the circles, but i want to keep the peace!! Can we get good food etc??

There's a small village near Dnnideer called Insch. It's like going back to the sixties there! Not much going on at all - I loved it!

I think your only option is to stop in Aberdeen. There's really not much to do elsewhere. When I 'did' Aberdeenshire I stopped with a friend for a few nights, just below Aberdeen, and then I stopped in Macduff. Which was a vile piss-pot.

But the stones. . ahhhhh!

I understand your problem. I'm a great believer in doing the stone things alone. I often just book three or four days to myself and get out there. Only that way can I spend 100% of the time in the field. I've been lost, chased by cows, shocked by electric fences and worried bt strange farmers from Land's End to Scotland to Ireland and loved every minute.

Next time I go to Aberdeenshire I'll stop in Insch. There's a great pub with Fats Domino on the juke box.

unlikely .

I'm hoping to get at least one long weekend up there in the next couple of months. I've only been to a couple of the show sites before and I can't wait to get back. We have a new customer in Edinburgh and I'll be back and forth like a yoyo. Hopefully, I'll manage a couple of days around Kilmartin, too!

I hope you're coming for at least 3 months, 'cos you'll need it ;-)

Inverurie would make a good base as it has a good range of restaurants with a top Indian (Planet Spice) and has enough of everything to keep you supplied. You can also get a train/bus to Aberdeen which could be handy for your better half whilst you're out stone hunting.

Having said that, if you went self-catering, there are some excellent farms selling their own produce (We get 90% of our food from The Store at Foveran) and it's some of the best grub we've ever had. They even do their own ready meals, hand made on the farm with their own ingredients which are also gorgeous.

There's a range of museums, galleries etc. in Aberdeen and you should both put aside an hour (it won't take much more) for the Marischal Museum which has some interesting prehistoric finds from the area + loads of other esoteric stuff. Once you've finished there, wander down the hill to 'Books n Beans' for a guilt free snacking experience and a huge second hand bookshop.

Aberdeen is a cultured enough place (in the right areas like any other city) check out the Music Hall and His Majesty's Theatre along with the Lemon Tree and you're sure to find something to occupy the evenings.

Having said that, September has very long warm evenings if you're lucky, and you could always be enjoying the last rays of sunshine at Easter Aquhorthies around 8-9 at night. :-)

You're coming at the right time though, as 90% of the crops will be cut & you should be able to access the circles with ease. Have fun :-)

Inverurie is very nice. if you do end up based there you might like to get in touch with Marian Nagahiro at Friends of Grampian Stones
