Rhiannon,
nice quote,
"Folks say that no man ever saw a 'winter-borne break. It is dry one day and running the next, but its first downpour was never beheld. Many years ago watch was kept day and night for a fortnight for the breaking of the Winterborne Abbas stream. One night the watchman on duty found that his pipe had gone out. 'Bridehead-lodge - he bean't 'bove hundred or two yard - can't do any harm to get light there.' But in those three minutes the winter-borne broke unseen."

I've seen it :)

ooh I remember your video! great stuff. I even believe in it (though it's tempting to think you had half a dozen friends with buckets just out of shot). But you can see why catching the exact moment seems so improbable. It's no wonder there are stories about it I suppose.

That video inspired me to look at the winterbourne in a different light, especially its relationship to Silbury Hill, now I go to Avebury to see that (this is weird) the Kennet is safe so to speak. Couple of weeks ago on a visit, with the flooding of the water meadows I heaved a sigh of relief that the natural world still goes on - no matter how much hot air we spout ;)
