Went to the Rollrights last Sunday(i know it was a silly day to go)but apart from the obvious amount of tourists(shall we go and have a cream tea in Chipping Norton next)you know the sort,it was such a disappointment, they have put a massive silver ball smack in the middle of the circle .Now i am not against modern art but it ruined the whole ambiance of the place.when i asked the point of this i was told it was so that the once in a lifetime visitors would go to other stones after this fabulous experience. So dont be surprised next time you turn up at some way out site, if the Rollright boys have put a turnstile at the entrance. And dont even mention the plastic croaking frog that was pure class.

Yeah, last time we went was around last xmas...there were lots of odd hippie types with bongo's giving the kids the eye for daring to talk and ask questions.

Wish they'd stop traffic using the road outside and get rid of the bloody building at the entrance, and some of the hedging, at least you'd be able to see the kingstone then from the circle. Thought the trees made it feel too closed in.

Having said that, went to see Rempstone Circle in Purbeck last month, maaan that was depressing. The stones seemed to be nearly buried under trees and forestry commison style deep ploughed trenches...though the stones themselves were lovely to look at, covered in moss and lichen, and the eponymous OS marking. It was a pretty spooky place though, there was mist and gloom all around, and i kept thinking i could see other folk out of the corner of my eye when i was taking piccies. Had the place all to myself for a good hour, not even any traffic on the road which runs right alongside the copse that the stones are in. Seemed a sad place, and the circle is pretty much decimated. There was apparently an avenue of stones nearby, but i couldn't see any evidence of it on the day i was there. The barrows up on East hill above the plantation are wonderful though, massive roundbarrows in that Wessex stylee. well worth a visit...maybe I'll choose a sunny day next time though...won't have the willies put up me so much then.

Silver ball?? is this a permanent fixture???
sounds shit,
how can they get away with that...
I must check it out then I can get really angry.

Have to say i completely disagree! (Vive la difference!)

I thought the Anish Kapoor sculpture was amazing, as I said in my weblog some tie ago: http://www.themodernantiquarian.com/user_profile.php?id=1761&show=weblog&weblog=16355

Its not permanent, merely on loan from a collection in Bradford, so the Rollrights will return to 'normal' shortly....
