A friend and I are planning to go down to stonehenge for the solstice and were considering camping out at weylands smithy or somewhere nearby on the way up or down... does anyone know what the rules are about camping there?... I can't remember what the sign said... alternatively, does anyone know of a good campsite in that general area?

Camping at waylands is illegal and you can be prosecuted.
But you could just wait till night then pitch, i have. hehe.
Theres a million and one places to camp without being seen in that area.

Solstice week is a busy week at waylands, so if you must camp there, please be considerate to the other visitors, (basically dont be a twat).
Also watch your car, the road to the barrow is closed for the last mile or so and the local scallie's like to trawl the area for your belongings.

If you've never been there, its a magical place that leaves a lasting impression on everyone, please contribute to that being a positive one for everyone you meet.

Basically no, you can't camp at Weylands smity. It is a national monument
and is a protected site. Camp on the other side of the Ridgeway if you must, in the trees, but please don't camp within the barrow area.

The nearest camp site, that I know of, is at further down the Ridgeway at Barbary Castle. This has a cafe, with a bar on site. tel 01793 845346
There are two campsites around Marlborough and the crop circle central at
The Barge - Honeystreet, at the very end of the Ridgeway.

If you do camp around weyland's smithy, the nearest fresh water tap can be found at SU 264835. Please don't wash your cloths here though.

every one allways camps in the trees on the other side of the ridgeway, oposite the gate, i can barely remember a time when i havnt seen a tent in there.
