This, surely, is one of the most evocative, magical, enchanting, and ethereal ancient sites in the world. Looking at the pictures, I wondered: Is it even possible to take a BAD picture of Castlerigg? It seems this ancient site will tolerate no picture short of stunning. I suppose the landscape is so utterly superlative and perfect that the pictures simply reflect that: there is no blight, no smudge of ugliness; one of the few last sacred places of completeness. It requires little effort to whisk oneself back thousands of years to the time when such a site was integral to local social and religious life. The fact that it has changed so little over those centuries is incredible. It is no small wonder this area was chosen for such a circle.

You've obviously not looked at my effort then.

We are all Roman here and proud of it ! :-)

Only Kidding, Only Kidding. Before the virtual rages start ;-)

One of the main problems in photographing Castlerigg is that it's setting is so photogenic, getting there when there aren't loads of other people trying to do the same thing, means visiting either very early, or in crap weather ;-)

There's a particularly difficult picture to take at Castlerigg, of the stone with the spiral carving. If the light isn't just right, it can't be seen at all. I've never seen it in the real myself, and have only seen one photo of it.

As far as I'm aware, no-one has posted a pic of the spiral here.
Though I would hope if I'm wrong, I'd be suitably harrangued.
