Though I don't condone any sort of vandalistic behaviour whatsoever (and in my opinion, should not go unpunished), it still makes me chuckle when all you so called earth children constantly moan about the number of "Tourists" visiting this sacred site. Or any sacred site, for that matter. I have read many of your blogs and am amused by the number of you complaining that there were too many people there.
Don't you realise that all of you are "Tourists" to somebody else? It's just a matter of perception. These wonderful stone circles have all been bequeathed to us all by our far-seeing ancestors and therefore should be accessible to and enjoyed by all. To claim exclusivity just because you are 'in tune' with ancient sites is a bit xenophobic/fascist/narrow minded/selfish, (delete where applicable) in the extreme. Thatcher and the police managed to do a good job of that at Stonehenge in the early eighties. I know, I was there when Hawkwind last did their cosmic thing at the stones and there were rumours abound of Bob Dylan making an appearance. Somebody referred to him as "The New Messiah"! Yeah right!
C'mon guys, just be the wonderful, tolerant, accepting, loving and peaceable beings our ancestors would have wanted you to be. Show the world that you are not just a bunch of unkempt, smelly hippie types and get with the program and embrace anyone who is interested in these sites. Recruit them so we have even more people to look after them so that our future offspring can also enjoy them ad infinitum.
Peace to you all.

I think you do most people - probably everyone - here a disservice. Yes, they love to visit the sites when there's no-one there but so what? What evidence do you have that they need to be told this...

Further evidence that you don't understand people here is this insulting advice:

"Show the world that you are not just a bunch of unkempt, smelly hippie types".

For your information squire we're just a bunch of people interested in the sites, we're happy to have others visit them but we don't want them to deliberately leave them different for the next person. It ain't rocket science.

Ouch, we should hold a poll as to how many of us take a bath/shower -expect it would be the majority....
but to add to the general discontent, read the following link, presumably you don't mind quad bikes racing round the stone circle either...

http://www.newsandstar.co.uk/news/1.136257

But already there have been objections to the scheme because of its proximity to the stone circle, and now planning committee members are to hold a site meeting to hear for themselves if the noise from the bikes would disturb the tranquillity of the stones.

Nice first(?) post.

Absolutely agree with that statement and like the best advice given to all tourist

"Take only Photographs, leave only footprint"

On the matter of the "smelly, hippy earth child" bit; although I was a 60's child, I do take a bath once a year whether I need to or not, I have a No' 3 hair cut (short), generally wear jeans and T-shirts and have played the odd game of rugby in the dim & distant past....so I would like to think that description doesn't really apply to me.

Love & Peace

Nearly a year ago, rockartwolf started a thread called What do we do for a living? http://www.themodernantiquarian.com/forum/?thread=42788&offset=600 it makes fascinating reading and, to name but a few of the occupations of the interesting peeps who post here, it includes a couple of gardeners, an IT manager, a postman, an electrician, a design engineer, an insurance claims manager and a couple of conservators.

Far from being 'earth children' (though some of us may be one of those as well) or implying we're a bunch of 'unkempt, smelly hippie types', you'll find (if you read through the above link) that we're actually just a bunch of 'ordinary' individuals doing an assortment of jobs and who happen to share an interest in things megalithic.

Perhaps you would like to tell us what you do and what your particular area of interest is in the megalithic subject?
