I'm getting married at the end of September, and we are taking our honeymoon in Ireland. We plan to visit some of the stones whilst there.

Looking for some recommendations.

We will be staying at the following places:

Dublin
Carlow
Kilkenny
Waterford
Cork City
Killarney
Limerick

all recommendations gratefully received!

That's temptingly close to the Beara peninsula. Would you be able to travel that far?

While in Killarney, be sure to swing down to Ross Castle and get the boat across to Innisfallen (only a 10 minute trip). Well worth the effort, and while it's not megalithic, it's a real gem.

Just off the top of my head

Dublin - National Museum

Carlow - Brownstown Dolmen

Waterford - purchase Fourwinds book on Waterford - loads of stuff but require a bit of effort.

Cork City - the UCC has a permanent exhibtion of ogham stones and rock art which is nice

Killarney - there is a stone circle just outside the town - Lissyvigeen

Limerick - definitely go to Lough Gur - easy to get to from the city and a beautiful place.

And as an aside - have you booked carlow and kilkenny? Id recommend Galway or somewhere further west (maybe west cork or kerry)over these.

Bogman covered it all really there but I'd agree that Lough Gur is a must if you are going to Limerick...and Duntryleague.

To add a layman's view to the locals' already posted, but assuming time will be at a premium ....

Dublin - if you can manage a diversion north, the Boyne tombs may be Ireland's Stonehenge, but nevertheless an essential visit. Or if the crowds don't appeal, Fourknocks near Naul. Or Tara!

Carlow - travelling from Dublin, Athgreany's Pipers are well worth a visit along the way; nearby Castleruddery, too. Then there's Haroldstown and Browne's Hill... cracking cromlechs, both.

Kilkenny - I doubt anyone could fail to be impressed by Kilmogue...

Waterford - Knockeen, and Gaulstown... both excellent

Cork - where do we start? Personally I'd take the trio of superb circles at Drombeg, Bohonagh and Reansacreena (arguably the finest 'stone circle' day in these Isles) with untold 'recent' history en-route. Or else Carrigagulla (near Ballynagree) is one of the most beguilling circles I've seen. The Island(Burnfoot) and Labbacallee wedges are also top class..........

Killarney... not a lot obvious in the immediate area... but a drive onto the Beara... well , take your pick. Ardgroom, Drombohilly etc. My favouriite - though a bit further afield - is Gurteen.

Limerick... ah, It's got to be the Lois, hasn't it?

To be honest you'll find worthwhile stuff everywhere. Don't suppose your soon to be has a sister. How lucky are you? Enjoy.

You MUST visit West Cork :

As well as The Gurranes near Castletownsend already mentioned, this is a must with stunning views.

Also you really have to visit the four West Cork peninsulas. They are spectacular. Beara as already mentioned is a must, but you really should treat yourselves to all of them .

Also, check out Bantry ( wonderful Bay, vibes and food ), and for great sounds, the internationally renowned De Barras in Clonakilty. If you're lucky, you may bump into Roy Harper as well !

If you can, get one of the many boat trips out to the islands ie. Sherkin Island from Baltimore as well.

Congratulations to you both, and have a wonderful time!

I would heartily recommend befriending Ryaner and getting him to show you round some of the sites on his "home turf" as we did - it made for a thoroughly enjoyable trip!

If that isn't possible, certainly take his recommendations to heart as he knows his stuff.

Hope you have a fabulous time...
