I'm in Dublin on a work trip at the moment. What are the chances of coming up with a prehistoric site, near Dublin, that will impress my colleagues (who aren't all that bothered by old rocks) and can be visited after about 5pm but before it gets dark?

I might be able to squeeze a visit in on Thursday morning, which would solve the daylight problem, but we won't have much time before we had to catch our ferry.

Anyone got any suggestions?

Hi Kammer, for me that would have to be Glendruid. http://www.themodernantiquarian.com/site/908/glendruid.html and as it might be close to the ferry if you are travelling via Dun Laoghaire. Also you are not too far from a few other sites, Ballybrack being one of them.

Sadly, I'm in Edinburgh on Thursday, so I can't be around to take you somewhere. Glendruid and Ballybrack are the obvious choices, but another option is Howth Demesne portal tomb.

If you have transport then I'd be very tempted by Fouknocks: http://www.themodernantiquarian.com/site/891/fourknocks.html which you can get a key for and have all to yourselves, otherwise Glendruid is the one and Ballybrack if you have time.

Re the above myself and lynn my wife were coming over there on a cheep flight hire a car and go to Newgrange if we have time we will try some of these as well cheers.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions.

I made it to the museum yesterday and was very impressed. Loads of prehistoric artefacts, and mostly really high quality (is that exhibition better than he one in the British Museum?). The log boat is great, and at the other end of the size spectrum so is the jewelry. Glad I got to see he bog bodies as well (after all that bloody Seamus Heaney at school).

Not much chance of making it to a site now though, because another meeting has been scheduled. :-(

Next time!
