Whilst up out and about around Freebrough and Gerrick today I spotted this name on the map (on the Liverton - Moorsholm road), along with Hagg Wood and Hagg Beck. Does anyone know anything about these places?

I tried to have a look at Hagg Hill, but due to the road being lined with woods most of the way you couldn't see much, and I didn't fancy getting stuck in mile-high weeds.

I was curious as to the names, especially with so many 'Hoeur' placenames up on Gerrick Moor, and this being not far away, and in clear view of Freebrough, if there's a Mother connection here - anyone?

Cheers,

Barry.

Ufortunately, I think word "hagg" in place names indicates marshland or an island of firm ground within marshland. Still, makes for some great and evocative place names!

Howdo Barry
Sorry to disappoint you fella but Hagg means a scrubby type land e.g covered in gorse, I think it comes from the old Danish. There's quite a few Haggs type places up on our moors. The adder is also known as the hagg worm in north yorks which coincidentally is also the same in Norway.
Gerrick Moor is a crackin place with tons of earthworks, unfortunately it was knocked about a bit by the army charging tanks over it in WWII.
If you drop me a line at fitzcoraldo at hotmail dot com I'll send you some ideas I've been putting together regarding the goddess on the moors

Hi Barry
I was mooching about on the MAGIC map last night, if you follow the Mill Beck south of Hagg Hill for about a mile you come to Temple Hagg, intriguing eh? The name only comes up when you have the map at 1:5000 so I doubt it's on the OS map.

I think there may be summat up with your mail box, my e-mail keeps bouncing back
