North Wales Ideas

close

The wife & I are thinking of spending some time in North Wales over the May Bank Holiday weekend (possibly camping if this weather holds up!). I've had a quick browse on the TMA map and it seems that there are many tombs and a few circles. I was wondering what everyones views were on "must sees". Ta

Also, as an aside as a little lad I camped on Anglesey and I remember a barrow/tomb that was near a beach (atop a cove?). It was a go-er in-er, if you went to the post office and got the key... I can't for the life of me find it - any pointers to that would be appreciated too...

Thanks!
Nath

The tomb you're thinking of is Barclodiad-y-Gawres. Bloody ace. We stayed in a cottage opposite it last August.

See my weblog about it here http://www.themodernantiquarian.com/user/1761/weblog/0/50412 and treaclechops' here: http://www.themodernantiquarian.com/user/1765/weblog/0/50520

The goer iner is Barclodiad y Gawres on the west coast south of holyhead
My must sees are Bryn celli ddu on Anglesey
Druids circle -Penmaenmawr
Capel Garmen -Betws y Coed
Dyffryn Arduddwy - Harlech
But there are many minor must sees

It's entirely possible to do most of the sites on Anglesey in a day. We went over on one bridge, did a clockwise circuit, and came off the other bridge.

I'd agree Capel Garmon is a major must-see, and don't forget the Great Orme mines!

How's about these ...

I have visited a Welsh place called Llangollen many times. The Welsh countryside is wonderful.

Thanks to everyone for their help and especially to Jane & Postman for tracking down that particular place for me :o)

I better get myself into gear and start organising a hit list - it's only next weekend. Blimey

Hi, just a quick one before you go..... I live quite near to Rowen which is oft overlooked and good for a rummage along an old roman road, there is the Maen y Bardd burial chamber and a number of standing stones...

It is an extremely steep long walk to the tops above Rowen - it is possible to drive up to the top and park near the youth hostel.

Happy Hunting!
