Ox Stones

Yep they are..I like the stone on R which in another pic from a different perspective has the profile of a raven's head complete with eye. Was supposed to have been fieldwalking with Geoff yesterday but snow blew that out then when stopped thought I'd see if gritting permitted..reckoned rightly snow'd enhance some detail. Fieldnotes soon, but sorry, no idea of folklore..was fieldwalking catchment below recently, looked up and 'oh'. What I do know now is that the immediate vicinity and as far as eye can see is rich in unrecorded archaeology..was to have been officially examined and signed off on Wed but for weather. Down at end of boulderfield below stones is a prob fallen circle and alignment hidden in tall heather, photography impossible no matter how I tried..a team of bods needed to suss, but oh for lidar round here: reckon open mouths. Theres a settlement half mile E and another half mile W visible from stones complete with fab big fallen circle, field system and track/ceremonial way/stone alignment W up the scarp to unrecorded standing stones complete with packing - and a nearby stone lined well or former spring - and views to Callow Bank/Stanage..and what look like mega field systems on plateau E of there. Field systems mean settlements. Work to do, paid work permitting. I've been applying my horticultural nous to vegetation patterns. Good results. The snow delineated a trackway - or meeting of two - below stones. I reckon there's a continuous scarp route from Barbrook/Big Moor way to Stanage area..sussed most of it. I think the stones are a fulcrum...what our predecessors made of them's anyones guess. Lidar or not, a future OS may perhaps look a tad different. So, folklore knowledge nil, observations plenty. A lot of legwork, but worth it. You should see the state of my heather abraded boots and laces now : )
