Damage done to an ancient Neolithic passage tomb in Co Sligo has been strongly condemned.
Photographer Ken Williams visited the site over the weekend and took photographs of words and shapes scratched into stones at the tomb which is over 5,000 years old.

I saw this on Facebook yesterday with Ken Williams' photographs - yes, heartbreaking to see such malicious and deliberate vandalism. As someone commented, because of the remoteness of the site it would be difficult to catch the offenders and prove their guilt.
This is truly awful; why?
How depressing. Fancy actually being able to go to the trouble of finding out about and getting to such a place and to clamber inside it as though you know it's interesting and important, but also being so thick and ignorant to scratch stupid rubbish on it. Let's hope it's pretty superficial. Let's hope one of the stones falls on their head next time. Let's hope all the folklore nonsense I like is true and karma and the protective spirits of the barrow rain down suitable justice. (Failing that, that there's a cctv camera on a rural doorbell somewhere).

Seems to me that everything will be destroyed in the end... which is why - to be frank - it's up to the likes of us who give a damn to record everything we can before it is gone.
Just got back from North Wales and it never fails to anger me the way that upland cairns are treated.. but in particular, the way this practice is not only condoned, but seemingly celebrated in places, with 'seats' positioned so locals can sit in comfort. I try not to judge people as really being plain ignorant, stupid... but clearly this is the case, since it would appear no malice is involved.
On a more positive note, I was was talking to the (female) farmer of Sylfaen (near Barmouth) on Tuesday at Cerrig Arthur stone circle - she's just moved in from Monmouthshire - and, instead of the usual "What are you up to then?", she was enthused with the history/prehistory of her new area. Said how with many of the old generation of local farmers dying off that old folk knowledge was being lost. I encouraged her to scan old photos she'd been given, record the old stories and get them online since.... once it's gone, it's gone.
