The trenches were not dug into the mound itself but in the area north of the car-park. Check Google maps and you will see how far away from the mound that area is and maybe realise that the report bears no relevance to provenance of the mound itself.
Also, maybe in town the fairies have to take whatever mound they can find? :)
Maybe you're implying it's a heap connected with the factory? I don't know when they opened the factory (the business only started in the 1930s). So in the 50s you'd probably remember whether the mound was there or not a decade or two earlier, and would fairy folklore get attached to new mound particularly amongst urban locals? I don't know but I'm tempted to say no
