Hi George,

its in the rubble from the steading which is being rebuilt by a really nice couple, they found it in one of the barn walls when working. I think it shall be taking pride and place in the new house when finished.

Hi George, you know the house, and b&b just above Cairnholy 2?, opposite those is an old barn..that is Cairnholy Steading, the couple are doing all the work themselves, and i had a guided tour and the views will be amazing once finished.

I have the details, will be sending off to D&E.

Hi Rich,

yeah, but its more of a broken off thing. It had been built into one of the barn walls. Just another note, behind the wooden shed building, is a stone about 6ft, tall and slender, perhaps once part of one of the burial mounds?..just a thought.

The thing looks pretty well preserved - hint at coming from something monumental possibly (pre-barn)?

Tutha stone sounds interesting also

Yeah, my guess by the size of the stone, perhaps used in a similar way to the carved stone placed inside the chamber of Cairnholy 1.

Sorry to be daft - Do you mean the carving was in rubble between some walls, or that it was part of the wall - with the stone placed so people could see the design? (or maybe it was so ruined it wasn't possible to know?) It would seem a shame if such a lovely thing had been hidden.

Hi, the stone was acutally built into the wall, and had not been used for its decorative purposes, but i gather just for the fact it was a good sized stone for the wall. It wasn't until the wall had been taken down to rebuild that it was found. The carvings weren't seen when in place, only once the wall was down.

The couple are now going to be putting the stone in pride of place inside the house once its finished. I think the best way to preserve the stone and the carvings.
