Boleycarrigeen Stone Circle at sunset 03/01/10, probably indicating sunset at winter solstice from what I saw this afternoon and as can be seen in the photo. This hasn’t been previously recorded as far as I can tell from the usual sources but myself and Tom Fourwinds thought we could see a spot of sunlight through the plantation that used to engulf the circle until early this year.
See fieldnotes for more info.

Great picture. I think we're right about the solstice. I nearly went up there today myself, too. Decided to head for The Curragh instead and went down the N4 instead of the N7 ... D'OH! Will go to Kildare tomorrow instead.
Yup thats a great pic. Look at the stone beneath the sun is that a face?
It's seriously bad up there at the moment Tom, as I said in the notes, if there wasn't a guy already on the road in front of me I was going to turn back to Athgreany instead! Roads are fine until you get to the backroads behind Kiltegan, might thaw off tomorrow though if the weather is good. Several trees have fallen along the rutted track too and the recently planted trees are now chest high. If you have time to go slooooow you'd be ok but I wouldn't hang around after sunset!!
Thanks drewbhoy, hard to tell what's on that stone with all the snow sitting on it!
Seriously outstanding photography Ken.
Thanks a million Kozmik_Ken :)
