Cairn IV, the southernmost in the group. This was previously hidden in thick vegetation.

Cairn II at the north of the group. Last time I came here this cairn had some young trees growing out of it, pleasing to see they’ve been removed from the monument.

Looking from Twmbarlwm’s motte the excellent siting of this little cemetery is clear... the cairns sit in the field to the right of the ridgeline trees [top left] boasting a fine panorama across the Severn to the hills of Gloucestershire etc.

The cairns reside in what is basically a great little nature reserve....

Apparently Coflein’s ‘Cairn III’...

Looking toward Cwmbran from a’top the major cairn. Assuming this hasn’t been restored (?) it appears more-or-less intact.

Noticed these on the map visiting Twmbarlwm ... and the main cairn only turns out to be one of the finest medium level round cairns I’ve seen in all South Wales.

There is an upright slab in the mound of Cairn III – remains of a cist or chamber?

The excellent Cairn I, as good a round cairn as I’ve seen in South Wales.

The much-disturbed centre of cairn II. There are some very substantial stones in the mound, one of which is standing up on end.

Mynydd Henllys

When visiting Twmbarlwm Hillfort (known locally as ‘the pimple’) it is worth having a look at the cairns which can be seen to the east of the Hillfort.
Access is easy enough – just follow the track north (which runs to the east of the Hillfort) and the cairns are on the right hand side of the track, behind a fence. The cairns are quite prominent, covered in grass. I visited the cairns about 2 years ago so can’t remember exactly how big they were but I do remember they were a fair size and easy enough to spot. I wouldn’t say it was worth the effort to visit the cairns specifically but they are certainly worth a look when visiting the Hillfort. Parking is easy.
