Larger kerbed cairn between Barbrook I and II. This one is a lot more overgrown with bracken than on our visit 6 years previously.

Excellent little kerbed cairn between Barbrook I and II. Last time we came this one was quite overgrown, now it’s much easier to see the structure. Looking SW across the Bar Brook towards the Big Moor (South) and Swine Sty monuments.

Weathered block on Barbrook 1 cairn. Cupmarked stones were found in this cairn during the 1960s excavation. Although this stone probably shows natural weathering, there is at least a possibility that some of these marks are the eroded traces of artificial carving.

Interesting cairn to the southeast of Barbrook II stone circle. The cairn is made up of a prominent kerb around an almost level platform of smaller stones. Whether this was the original design or a result of stone robbing isn’t obvious.

Small cairn, which may be clearance rather than sepulchral, with neat kerbed example beyond. These cairns are on the slope between Barbrook II and Barbrook I stone circles.

Substantial cairn slightly south and downslope from Barbrook II. Like most of the cairns in this area it was dug by Mitchell in the 1850s.

Barbrook cairns

The cairn cemetery lying between Barbrook II and Barbrook I proves well worth a stop off. A widely varied group, mostly dug into in the mid-19th century, many have excellent kerbs. The star of the show is the rebuilt cairn closest to Barbrook I, a bit of a classic of drystone edging about four courses high. One of the stones in the surround shows an interesting weathered pattern that is probably natural, but just possibly could be the very eroded trace of cupmarks.

From here we drop slightly to Barbrook I.

Added simply as a site to gather thoughts and images relating to the large burial cairn-field -’cemetery’, largely found between barbrook I and barbrook II SC’s.

Visible either side of the track between the SC’s, but 1-2 ‘outsider’ rocky bumps exist also.

Kerbed cairns in part, some more simple in design, MOST are robbed out, some quite extensively so, forming neat little ‘halos’ upon the grounds’ surface
