the mitochondria is not part of the normal 46 chromosomes(23 in sex cells) it is called an organelle and exists with its own DNA with in the cell (used in energy processes if my memory serves me well). It is only passed on by the female as stated earlier and is often used in studies due to this and its robustness, it tends to change less from generation to generation as it is isolated ( daugters of eve etc).
Anyway i have to dash but if you think of it as a female Y chromosone (although it is noway this) due to its transmission it is useful
