the three legs of mann

I was very surprised to see the three legs symbol in an italian restaurant today. I asked the man and he said it's the symbol of Sicily, next to it was the other symbol, a big sun-god. No way I said, this is a British symbol, from the Isle of Man. He looked down on me, and smiled at my ignorance. It was a typical example of transcontinental ignorance. Does anyone know of this symbolic connection or if it stems from the common indoeuropean heritage before the celtic past? It seems that the Manx three legs are not as old as the Sicilian ones.
