I am afraid that in my opinion the best thing to do is exactly what they plan, make an exact replica and keep the original protected. Given there are a small minority of morons in every community = the larger the nearby population the larger the number of morons = the greater the chance of the stone being abused. Places such as Kilmartin can get away with leaving rock art exposed as it is a much more rural spot with a much lower population. Therefore much less likely to be abused. I know this is far from ideal but at least the stone will remain protected until (hopefully) at some point in the future the stone can be revealed in all its glory without the fear of damage? Just my opinion :)

The RA motifs at Dunadd at the start of the Kilmartin Valley were NOT left exposed. The footprint, the carved boar, the Ogham... they are all resin replicas laid on top of the buried originals. They have been for decades. Few visitors know or suspect.
Some stones even in rural spots will always be subject to destructive forces and people who want to enhance the art with their own contributions or try to remove sections or panels with chisels and hammers.
I think in the case of Cochno and actions of Ludovic Mann and the Faifley Young TOI, TERMY and FLEET the right thing was done fifty years ago. And yes, the Cochno Stone and the RA is still there. So is a LOT of other stuff.
