Well newcomers would do exactly that, why wouldn't they. And a percentage of old hands already do it - loads of sites show evidence of digging as you know. And of course, all prehistoric standing stones (if such it was meant to be) are scheduled so the sequence was depicting a criminal act - at peak viewing time, and chortling about it.

Sorry to sound a spoilsport, it's a great programme, but my gripe is that the Beeb doesn't take proper archaeological advice, and should.

Recent holes reported at both Boscawen-un and near Bocawen Ros. Thanks BBC4.

Was it BBC4 that reported these ground disturbances? Is there a link you can post? I'm not sure from your grammar whether you are actually thanking BBC4 for reporting it or are you blaming BBC4 and MacKenzie Crook (not Toby Jones too?) for the appearance of a hole at the base of a stone in Cornwall in June 2014? And are you suggesting that was due to a comedy series which was first aired in the Autumn of 2014. The second series which showed the fallen stone in a field throughout its run was noty aired until the end of October 2015. So it is either excellent of them to report on something which Cornish Ancient Sites Protection Network (CASNP) hadn't even noticed. Or in some unbeleivable way to be able to affect past events through future TV Comedy Programming.

In fact the last piece of digging CASPN noticed was a small hole at the Merry Maidens back in October 2014. "A small hole was found in the turf by one of the stones which looks like it was possibly dug by a metal detectorist." So there we have it "possibly dug by a metal detectorist" or a dog, or a rabbithole. And a small hole too...

There has been some activity noted at Boscawen-un by CANSP but that was back in 2008 when some fire had been lit... "Small fire under Central stone that rests at bottom is blackened. Large stone at side scorched on one side." The only explanation can be that the perpetrators were pagans driven to fire raise at Boscawen-un by watching films such as The Wicker Man (Thanks British Lion Films - surely it must be them to blame?). In a 21st Century recreation of the "fire-leap" sequence perhaps? Maybe the local Tin Mine had not produced much Tin that year. Maybe they sacrificed something on their fire? A burnt offering?

There actually has been pics posted on HA of the hole at Boscawen-un

Apparently it is in the exact spot where a wax "talisman" offering was found a few years previously... so the pagans obviously disturb the ground there a lot with their nudey fire dances and waxy talisman burials and suchlike and soforth. Doesn't look like a detectorist's hole to me.
